Design → Legend

Controls whether a legend is shown and how it is positioned and styled.

Show Legend

Toggles the legend on or off. All other legend options are hidden when the legend is disabled.

Legend Title

Optional text displayed at the top of the legend. Leave blank to show no title.

Legend Position

Where the legend is placed relative to the chart frame. Options:

Group Values
Right Right-Top, Right-Middle, Right-Bottom
Left Left-Top, Left-Middle, Left-Bottom
Top Top-Left, Top-Center, Top-Right
Bottom Bottom-Left, Bottom-Center, Bottom-Right
Inside Inside-Top-Left, Inside-Top-Center, Inside-Top-Right, Inside-Bottom-Left, Inside-Bottom-Center, Inside-Bottom-Right

Tip: After placing a chart, you can move the legend frame manually in InDesign. Use the Reset Position button that appears after a manual move to snap it back to the configured position on the next redraw.

Legend Layout

  • Column — Legend items are stacked vertically (default for left/right positions).
  • Row — Legend items are arranged horizontally (default for top/bottom positions).

The orientation is set automatically when you change the position, but you can override it here.

Legend Alignment

Text alignment within each legend item label: Left, Center, Right, or Justified.

Legend Label Position

Controls whether the label appears before or after its marker and value in each legend item: First or Last.
